HBO Releases New Trailer for David Byrne Doc: 'David Byrne's American Utopia'

With Spike Lee's direction, the documentary aims to enlighten the ears and mind

August 24, 2020

David Byrne brings his brand of frenetic melody and percussion, draped in gray elevator suit regalia, to the latest teaser trailer for HBO’s upcoming documentary David Byrne’s American Utopia.

Director Spike Lee helped adapt Bryne’s original Broadway show, which ran from October 2019 to February 2020, into a thematically diametric delight for the eyes; simple square stage, diverse ensemble of instruments and stage light strikes. The original show also produced a GRAMMY-nominated 2018 album.

The diverse 11 member band perform some of David’s greatest hits, spanning across his solo career and as a member of The Talking Heads. These include “This Must Be the Place” and “Everybody’s Coming To My House.” Byrne also performs a cover of Janelle Monáe’s “Hell You Talmbout.” True to David’s style, the show also features him reading politically charged monologues, addressing some of the most difficult issues our country faces today.

“This jubilant production, choreographed by Annie-B Parson, transforms an icon of alienation into a cosmically cozy senior statesman,” The New York Times writes in their review of the Broadway show.

David Byrne’s American Utopia is set to release on HBO and HBO Max October 17.

Quarantine effects from COVID-19 have sent fans of Bryne into a content tailspin, looking for something new to scratch that creative itch. A YouTube user recently took the classic Talking Heads song “Once In A Lifetime” and removed everything except for the artist’s vocals. Make sure to remain seated while listening. Byrne’s vocals alone may spur you to buy a plain gray suit.
